No matter where in the northern hemisphere you are, it’s been a hot summer.
(If you’re of a southern persuasion, roll with it – you’re used to the heat anyway).
There’s no shortage of different summer rituals to keep cool and stop yourself from strangling the next person that walks by. For all the different techniques & strategies, however, there’s no tradition stronger than one of the oldest: ice cream.
There’s not a sweeter sound in summer months than the chime of an ice cream truck. If you don’t happen to live in a cul-de-sac in the 1950s, you’ll probably have to go for the next best thing – ice cream from your local Walmart.
Here’s our list of amazing ice cream products we suggest you try the next time you’re at Walmart. You won’t be disappointed!
Do you know what the most reliable form of a desert is? A birthday or wedding cake – because really, who’s going to screw up a birthday or wedding cake? The next best thing, then, is Birthday Cake ice cream. Halo Top offers a delicious birthday cake ice-cream option at Walmart, which is especially good for those watching their waistline.
A tub of Halo Soft can run a hefty price tag, so it’s certainly nowhere near the cheapest option on the menu. But nothing beats a classic birthday cake-flavored ice cream- except spicy ice cream, but we’ll get to that a little later.
It’s all well and good to be a pretentious hipster about every little thing you consume – but if you’re willing to take a step back into the real world, not everything has to be made by blind Belgian nuns!
Indeed, some of the best ice cream brands in the world still make amazing products – chief among them is the Breyers Original. An all-time classic (and consistently the highest rated ice cream at Walmart), Breyers delivers affordable joy.
Consider the Chocolate Truffle – the lack of artificial hormones will almost make you feel better about downing an entire tub in 37 minutes.
Ever wondered what “Oregon Strawberry” flavor tastes like? Well, wonder no more! Tillamook is famous for making ice creams in slightly off-beat flavours that, for some reason, make us feel like we’re pioneer lumberjacks exploring the great American wilds, while consuming processed cream and sugars.
The packaging is extremely wholesome, and the brand actually cares about where they source their ingredients from – you know, if you’re into that kinda thing.
In this world, there are 2 types of ice cream eating habits – one is eating classy, finely portioned sorbets with a delicate & tasteful approach. The other is jumping face-first into a giant tub of Neapolitan ice cream like a pack of wild hyenas.
Guess which type we prefer.
Kemp’s has been around for a long time, and for a good reason – the classic family-size pail is the perfect antidote to a hot family day. Unpretentious, high-quality, delicious ice cream. How can you go wrong?

Ice Cream used to be very simple, but now comes in a variety of flavors and colors. However, that doesn’t mean someone will turn down a classic like vanilla ice cream.
That’s why we’re in love with Hygeia vanilla ice cream.
They use simple, farm-sourced milk to produce a clean, simple vanilla ice cream that’s absolutely delectable. Be warned: it’s hard to find in stock because it flies off the shelves when it’s around.
We are what you might call ice cream purists at the office here. We don’t like big brands, and we don’t like non-standard ice cream presentations. It’s probably no surprise then that the next item on our list is an ice cream sandwich from a big brand. What can we say – we’re only human!
The fact is, Great Value makes weirdly good ice cream sandwiches, and for only $2 a pop! Sometimes, they can be just the thing to kick your summer heat blues. You can never go wrong with ice cream sandwiches. What if we made spicy ice cream sandwiches in the future? Just kidding, we’re not that crazy.
Blue Bunny is famous for three things: an adorable logo, hilariously goofy stock images, and amazing ice cream.
Blue Bunny keeps it simple, with classic flavors like banana-split and cookies & cream, while occasionally mixing it up with things like “Cherrific Cheesecake” and “Salted Caramel Craze.”
Isn’t that just so gosh-darned adorable?
Speaking of adorable – I mean, come on.
If you’re looking for something to mesmerize your 4-year-old or want to unapologetically relive your youth, Kemps is an amazing guilty pleasure. They specialize in candy-flavored ice cream – if you can even call it ice cream. It’s sort of a mix of ice cream, cookie crumbles & little jelly bits we can only assume are Care Bear dropping (sorry for that imagery).
Seriously – it’s like taking Willy Wonka and squeezing him into an ice cream tub (or some less morbid analogy). You should try IttiBitz at least once, and then never speak of it again.
If you want a nice alternative to the big brand-we-shall-not-name-that-has-two-first-names-in-it, Edy’s is a great option. They follow the classic light ice cream style with some weird additions (like Splenda; seriously, there’s something off about that) you find in massive retailers, but it’s actually quite solid!
We’re fond of the butter pecan – be warned, though, it’s usually out of stock, so jump on that the next time you see it.
It doesn’t matter if it’s summer, fall, winter, or spring, you will still have cravings for ice cream. We’ve all heard of Walmart, and the one thing we love about Walmart is the variety they have. But when there’s too much variety it’s hard to choose and this is especially true about ice cream. We hope this guide helps you make a decision on your ice cream choices the next time you go to Walmart, and don’t forget to try out Hotscream’s Spicy Ice Cream.
